In Hamilton, Burlington and Mississauga, we mainly deal with three types of cockroaches which are the Oriental, German and the Brown Banded cockroach. These pests are nocturnal and prefer dark and cool places. There is an old joke from the 50’s which states the only thing that will survive a nuclear apocalypse are cockroaches as they extremely difficult to get rid of. Cockroaches will also invade the cleanest of kitchens, where they can find food to live off that you might not even be aware was ever there.
Cockroaches aren’t indigenous to Hamilton, however they do get here through the transportation of food from America to our grocery stores. When snowbirds (people who live in Ontario for the summer, but move to the warmer climate of the States in the winter to Golf) visit Florida for the winter, they may bring cockroaches back with them in their suitcases. If you buy used furniture, or pickup couches or chairs off the side of the road, you might want to give it a thorough cleaning, or inspection as they may harbour cockroaches, fleas or bedbugs. Most of the cockroaches we find are in downtown Hamilton where there is a higher density of people, however you’ll find them all over Burlington, Oakville and Dundas.

In the late summer and early fall we typically get a plethora of phone calls from households who get swamped with cockroaches.
